Top Tips for Staying Happy and Healthy During the Holidays

Holiday cheer and this time of the year are often filled with celebration, friends, family and togetherness.  It’s also filled with long “to-do” lists, stress, toxicity and unhealthy food. That’s usually the case with a “normal year,” but 2020 has been a little different from “normal.”   We’ve had to pivot a great deal this year and we’re continuing to do so during the holiday season.

Instead of adding additional physical and emotional stress to your plate, try some of these tips for a happier and healthier holiday season.  These tips can carry into the New Year as well.

Give Yourself the Gift of “Balance”

Ladies, this year has given us grace to “do it messy!”  So, gone are the days of perfection and complete balance.  Does that really even exist?

What I’m proposing is a complete mindset shift around how you honor your body and your self-care needs during the holiday season. Queens, this is your time to add even MORE self care and love!  This is a time for giving, so how about you give yourself a gift that’s going to nourish you beyond the 10-minute sugar rush of that wretchedly unhealthy fruit cake your aunt likes to make.

Be mindful and intentional with your food choices

There is nothing wrong with enjoying good food during the holiday season.  I love food and have no guilt or shame when enjoying nourishing foods that I love.  Though things are different this year with parties, work events and gatherings with friends and family, we will still be around holiday food if you’re celebrating the season.  With that being said, this should not be an opportunity to sabotage your goals and health between now and the New Year (or beyond).

If you find yourself grabbing junk food or guzzling down extra alcohol, ask yourself how you’re feeling.  Are you stressed?  Feeling anxious (I’ve been hearing this a lot lately)?  Depressed?  With this year especially, you’re not alone if you are feeling one or more of these feelings.   Emotions play a huge role in our food (and alcohol) choices.  Being in tune with your mindset, feelings and intentions will play a large part in your choices.

If you know you have an upcoming event or family gathering, make sure you eat something healthy and satisfying before you head out.  While at your event, enjoy a little bit of something you’re craving or wanting to try and fill the rest of your plate with lean protein and veggies.  You don’t have to feel deprived this holiday season, but don’t overdo it either.

Stay Active

Exercise is very important during the holiday season.  Have you heard “endorphin’s make you happy?”  It’s true!  Not only is it important to get that booty moving when it’s cold outside (and year round), but it helps with your mood too!  This is a great time to join a gym, start a new fitness class or find some new gal pals for accountability.  During quarantine, I have been walking a lot and it’s been so nice to get out in nature for some fresh air and movement.  Are you more of the “outdoorsy” type?  Grab your skis or ice skates and bundle up for a fun event.  There are many options (indoors and outdoors) this holiday season.  Find what makes you happy and get others involved.  Whatever you choose, keep it moving!

 Find Time for Rest

Yes, exercise and movement  are important but so is rest!  Especially during the busy holiday season and winter months.  Your body needs it and craves it during the winter season!!!  Not only will you feel more refreshed, but it will help with your stress levels and keep you from making poor choices.  If you’re finding it difficult to manage a rest and sleep schedule, you may need to make some changes in your routine.  Sleep should be a priority; especially this time of the year.  Try going to bed and waking up around the same time.  Limit your television and technology viewing a few hours before bed.  Relax in a hot epsom bath with some lavender and other oils.  Grabbing a good book and cup of tea helps in the evening too.  Again, find what works for you and make it a priority.  Rest is not something that should be negotiable any time of year.

 Bump Up the Self Care

If you’re one of my clients or follow me on social media, you know how much I stress Self Care.  After learning the hard way of pouring from an empty cup, I’ve become a Self Care Queen! This is something I had to learn the hard way but it’s something I make a priority in my own lifestyle.  It’s non-negotiable!   Especially during the busy holiday season.  Why?  Because it’s SO important!

Women are the first ones to put themselves last!  If you resonate with this statement, then you may need to ask yourself how much you’re adding self care into your lifestyle.  A hot epsom salt bath, massage, yoga class or new outfit can make a huge difference.  You’re not being selfish!  You’re taking care of you and in turn, will benefit so many around you.  When the holiday season is stressful and you’re feeling run down, bump up the self care.  It’s good for the body and mind!

set boundaries

Talk to your family and friends and explain that you’ll be doing things differently this year.  Share with them that just because it’s the holidays, it doesn’t mean you’re going to settle for nutritionally deprived foods that take more than they give your body.  Explain that you’ll be creating some healthy delicious options and offer to share with them, it is the holidays, after all!

Beware of Toxic People

The holidays can bring upon stress when it comes to gatherings with friends and family.  We often hear about “tolerating” someone for an event or evening.  You may feel uncomfortable being around a group of friends or family members.  Whatever the case, choose wisely.  Ask yourself if the stress, anxiety and frustration is worth it.  I am not saying to isolate yourself from your family and friends, but choose what makes you happy and feel healthy.  Maintaining distance and setting limitations or boundaries may better serve you.  You should surround yourself with those who light you up and make you happy.

exercise your creativity in the kitchen

Try new and exciting recipes. Splurge and buy expensive superfoods, interesting fresh fruits and vegetables that you don’t always get, nuts and seeds and truffled extra-virgin olive oil.  I’ve become a huge fan of speciality oils and balsamic vinegars.  I love the incredible flavors and I enjoy cooking more when I use specialty ingredients.  If you’re looking to save money on Superfoods, I recommend Amazon and stores like Home Goods and Marshalls.

Healthy food can be totally gourmet and special too. Make your own homemade chocolate with mint leaves and stevia for sweetness. Adorn your salads with pomegranates and walnuts.  Go out of your comfort zone and see what healthy meals you can whip up with some new ingredients.

If you’re looking for a SWEET and healthier treat, I welcome you to check out my favorite recipe to share with friends and family during the holidays.  Not only is this Bark super easy to make but it’s enjoyed by many!  It stores well, looks adorable in a treat bag and is enjoyed just as much when frozen or refrigerated.

RECIPE:

Dark Chocolate Coconut and Cranberry Bark

I hope you found some value in these tips.  Even though they are all important, incorporating a few of them can make a huge difference in your holiday season.  This time of the year passes so quickly, so I encourage you to make it a magical, happy time.
Your health and happiness should be a huge priority!  You don’t have to wait until the New Year to get started!

Eat Your Way Healthy Through the Holiday Season

The holidays are often when everyone begins to worry more about the sweet and savoring indulgences that will no doubt grace every holiday table. It becomes a time where often you give yourself permission to let loose and eat whatever.  Then New Year’s rolls around and you feel like you got hit by a food truck.

1.  Give Yourself the Gift of Balance

What I’m proposing is a complete mindset shift around how you honor your body and your self-care needs during the holiday season. This is a time for giving, so how about you give yourself a gift that’s going to nourish you beyond the 10-minute sugar rush of that wretchedly unhealthy fruit cake your co-worker likes to make.

2.  Set Boundaries with Your Family

Talk to your family and explain that you’ll be doing things differently this year.  Explain that just because it’s the holiday season, it doesn’t mean you’re going to settle for nutritionally deprived foods that take more than they give your body.

Explain that you’ll be creating some healthy delicious options and offer to share with them.  It is the holidays, after all!

For me, I explain to people that it’s not about losing weight for me (or keeping it off).  It’s about feeling better, wanting more energy, not feeling bloated and irritated and enjoying the festivities and connectedness of the holiday season.

3.  Exercise Your Creativity in the Kitchen

Try new and exciting recipes. Splurge and buy expensive superfoods, interesting fresh fruits and vegetables that you don’t always get.  Try dishes with nuts and seeds and truffled extra-virgin olive oil.

For me, I pick and choose which I will spend more on (celebrating and holidays) and which I will find more bargains.  Even though I love splurging on some cooking ingredients, I also like to be frugal. I love buying inexpensive foods, oils and seasonings from Home Goods, Marshall’s and specialty oil & vinegar stores.  The specialty stores often share recipe tips too!

I love getting creative in the kitchen.  Especially if I am cooking (as opposed to baking) because there is room for flexibility and combining of flavors.  Try adding pecans to a brussels sprouts dish.  Maybe add some cranberries to a butternut squash dish.  I love cooking fresh rosemary with different kinds of meats.  Especially steaks (I love bison)!

Healthy food can be totally gourmet and special too. Make your own homemade chocolate with mint leaves and stevia for sweetness. Adorn your salads with pomegranates and walnuts.

Here are a few more tips and tricks…

  • Swap white potatoes with roasted sweet potato and butternut squash
  • Thicken the drippings from your turkey for gravy with arrowroot or tapioca starch to stay away from gluten and GMO corn starch.
  • Try making coconut whipped cream instead of dairy and serve with homemade roasted pumpkin with a bit of cinnamon, stevia and crumbled pecans
  • Ditch the bread and stick with extra veggies drizzled with high-quality olive oil
  • Use plain yogurt instead of sour cream
  • Make cauliflower rice instead of white rice

I welcome you to try one of my favorite (and healthy) dishes for the holiday season: Sweet Potato, Apple & Sage Soup

We all know the holiday season can be overwhelming and filled with LOTS of food!  Discover what works for you and your lifestyle.  Try implementing some of these tips or incorporate some of your own.  It’s a new season and a great time to express your creativity and try new things.

Negative people

How to Detox Negative People From Your Life

Negative people weigh us down and keep us from achieving greatness, better health and much happiness.

Have you ever felt overwhelmed because of the negativity or negative people that surround you?

In this world, there are negative people that are hard to avoid. These people drain your soul, and leave you feeling like they are constantly sucking the life out of you. I call these people Qi suckers because they can suck you dry and deplete your vital life force, otherwise known as Qi.

I WANT TO ASK YOU A FEW QUESTIONS…

  • Are you feeling supported by the people in your life?
  • Do the people in your life add value to your existence?
  • Looking at the people in your life, do you feel they love you unconditionally?
  • Are you accepted for who you are?

If you answered no to any of the above, then you may be surrounded by toxic or negative people.

There are many things in life that are toxic, including food and chemicals; however, there are also negative people who are just as toxic. You must be clear on who lifts you up and who hurts you. Toxic people significantly impede our happiness and contribute to our high-stress levels.  This leads to digestive issues, poor sleep, headaches and weight gain.

If you know you have negative people in your life, it may be best for your health to set clear boundaries for them so you can continue to thrive.

HERE’S HOW TO DO IT:

1. Take 5-15 minutes to write down three boundaries you want to set in your life.

2. Now, think of 5 people who are crossing them. There may be more, but I want to be realistic about what we can accomplish during this exercise.

3. How will you know when these boundaries are crossed?  Often, you’ll feel uncomfortable when boundaries are broken, and you get that “gut feeling” that a particular person is not good for you.

4. When these boundaries are crossed, how will you handle it? You deserve to be happy and fulfilled from the people in your life.  If there are people who are not contributing to your happiness, it may be time to let them go or lovingly detach. You do not need to remove this person entirely from your life, but you need to create a healthy distance.

For example, if you want to say no to a party, event or lunch where you know this person will be, you have to make a strong decision to put yourself first. Can you hold onto your sacred space if you attend or do you need to say no? Saying no to something that does not serve you may bring up feelings of guilt, but the more you say yes to your existence and happiness, the more freedom you’ll have when you say NO.  In addiiton, the greater quality of life you’ll experience.

5.  Bring in the Positivity!  Bring in people and relationships who lift you up, encourage you and show positive support.  When you have dreams, plans and goals, these are the people who encourage you to live that kick ass life that you deserve!

“Detachment means to remove one’s mind from all sorts of desires. As the mind is removed from desires, the energy that was being destroyed in running after these desires is saved, and it becomes a flame.”  -Osho Quotes

Feng Shui Quick Tips

Untitled design (17)

Hello, Friends!

I hope you’re having a wonderful Friday!!!  The weather here in Maryland has been absolutely gorgeous!  All of my windows are open, the sun is shining and I am loving the clean air breezing through the house.  I picked up some fresh flowers today and have several gorgeous bouquets placed throughout.

Did you know that a healthy, clean home can create greater happiness in your life?

do you feel like your home could use a healthy change?

I am going to share some simple and quick tips to incorporate Feng Shui into your home.  These quick and simple changes can create a healthier and happier environment for you and your family.  Let’s get started!

LOVE

1.  Meditate daily to clear your mind

2. Keep two fresh roses on the side of your bed.  visualize what they mean for you calling in love.  toss any dead flowers and replace with new ones.

3.  keep your bed linens crisp, fresh and clean.

4.  Romantic ambiance can be created with candles.  Make sure you choose a clean and healthy version to avoid toxic exposure.

5.  Sleep on one side of the bed.  Clear out some extra dressers to create a space for your partner.

HEaltH

1.  Clear out clutter in your living space.

2.  Reserve your bedroom for sleep and intimacy.  Keep papers, work and electronics out of your room.

3.  When choosing a paint color, avoid bright and load colors.  Calm colors such as beige and cream can create a more comfortable living area.

4.  Choosing a mattress and bedding that supports comfort and rest will help improve your sleep and health.

5.  Choose a wood bed frame instead of a metal one.  If you do have electronics in your room, the metal will pick up electromagnetic waves and disrupt sleep.

6. air flow is very important!  fans are a great way to help with air movement and flow.  in addition, fresh plants are an excellent addition to increase air purification.

Money

1. The first impression of your home sets a tone.  You want it to be warm and inviting.  Make sure your door bell operates properly and your house numbers are visibly available, so that abundance can find you.

2. Regular leaks can represent financial leaks, so make sure none are present in your home.

3. A stable home allows stability and opportunity for finances to grow.

4. Keep your kitchen and stove clean.  Use your burners equally, as this opens up a variety of opportunities and financial channels.

5. Replace negative beliefs about money with positive affirmations.

6. Images of flowing water, running horses and moving boats represent flow and abundance.  Choose these in prints and other visible decorations.

Spend some time this weekend looking around your home and noting where changes can be made.  Simple adjustments can have a large impact on your health and happiness!

Have a wonderful weekend!!!

XO,

   Kim
